Flaming Lips NYE Contest - Rose Parade update

As you know the Flaming Lips put on a YouTube event which ended yesterday. A dance contest submission where the winner gets to share space on the stage with the Lips and even two free tickets so you can bring your friend.

The winner was to have received a call yesterday 12/26/2006. Should that winner not be successfully contacted they move on to the next runner up(s) until the connection is made.

As of this writing I've checked both their YouTube address http://YouTube.com/group/flaminglips as well as their official site at http://www.flaminglips.com and no announcement is posted... nor was one expected as the fine print would preface.

However one would expect that the winner would have posted in great excitement their good fortune as this is a much coveted prize. Unless of course Warner Brothers conditioned for a gag order (poor winner, that would be a hard secret to be forced to try and keep! We'll understand if you leak it!).

Some have posted comments such as "... wouldn't it be fantastic if ALL of us got to dance on stage..." and to many that is more than likely what they hope in their hearts of heart might occur!

Knowing Wayne Coyne only from media and the Fearless Freaks DVD alone you'd get the feeling that he would be just that type to do something exactly like that. But again, this contest is solely Warner Brothers last word.

It is assumed that he legaleze stating WB would elect the panel of voters, most expect it will be the 3 band members and ultimately front man Wayne Conye's call.

These boys have been busy. Wraping up a wild year of touring The NYE (New Years Eve) gig in L.A. immediately follows their San Francisco show the day before, and is followed hours later by the Rose Parade in Pasadena. According to www.flaminglips.com the very next moring Jan 1, 2007, the band will be riding the Oklahoma Centential float.

I discovered a link with Rose Parade 2007 Float Details N to Z which says:
"Oklahoma (#50)
Float Theme: Oklahoma Rising

"Oklahoma Rising" celebrates the centennial of the state of Oklahoma in 2007. The float is part of a year-long celebration that includes special events and activities designed to promote the birthday of the state and its incredible spirit, long history and bright future of its rich traditions, cultures and people.

An invitation to this historical event is represented as an open gift displaying the 100th birthday celebration, welcoming visitors and state residents to the gala festivities. The 23-foot-tall cake is iced with carnations and roses. Gift packages are decorated in swirling ribbons of chrysanthemums, oncidium orchids, dendrobium orchids and safflower. O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A is spelled out in five- to ten-foot-tall letters of orange Mirage roses framed in white carnations. A lush floral carpet of 50,000 Charlotte roses and red gerbera frames garden steps created with coconut flakes and ironed cornhusk. One special package is opened at the corner of Colorado and Orange Grove Boulevards during the parade to unveil an exciting surprise for parade viewers.

NOTE: DO NOT MISTAKE THIS OTHER FLOAT FOR THE ONE THE FLIPS ARE ON - IT IS *NOT* THIS ONE BELOW

Oklahoma Centennial (#37)
Float Theme: A Unique History

Celebrating its 100th anniversary of statehood, Oklahoma shares its history with depictions of a gigantic Native American chief's headdress (more American Indian tribes are located there than anywhere in the U.S.), flowing waters (the state has more miles of water shoreline than the east and west coasts combined), a lasso-twirling cowboy (could that be Oklahoma native Will Rogers?), a huge American bison, an oil well, cowboy boots with the centennial logo and a grove of Redbuds (the state tree). The 70-foot-long float is pulled by an eight-horse team of black and white Express Clydesdales.

The surrey with a fringe on top at the front is made of rice, strawflower and carnation petals. The headdress features everlasting, black seaweed, pampas grass, chrysanthemums, pinto beans and split peas. The cowboy's boots are adorned with flaxseed, statice and rice, with silverleaf buckles. And the oil well gushes with rice, silverleaf and seaweed.

We will be checking various sites blogs, forums, etc., and even polling others for any information we can get about the "winner"(s?) of the Dawn of Destiny NYE Dance on stage with the Lips contest results immediately upon learning more.

DO YOU have any inside information about the current Flips happenings?

If you are volunteering to help with the float, or know the person who got a call from the FLIPS (or Warner Bros) that they've won please
post here!

Around noon today, 12/28/2006 (after a two day delay from the scheduled announcement) the site http://YouTube.com/group/flaminglips
discussion board says:

"A winner has been chosen...We are contacting the person now and will announce once that is confirmed. Thanks!"

Will let you know further once we learn more.

Still waiting for someone to post as to whether or not volunteers are needed to ready the float.

Hey that's PLURAL. Someone posted an excerpt from The Times on the www.flaminglips.com discussion board which reads in part:

"For this New Year's show, the onstage dancers will be picked from Lips fans who've uploaded videos of their dance steps onto YouTube, and Coyne says he's impressed with the results: "They can share their freakiness and not be overshadowed by the Flaming Lips.""

Sounds like it will not be limited to just ONE video entry asked to join on stage.

ALSO NOTE this is to be a "UFO" show. Also from same article:

"Now, of course, all-out for the Lips' is far bigger than that. For most of this year, they've been talking about their plans to introduce a giant UFO to their stage set-up — a plan that was intended to be hatched at the Hollywood Bowl this summer but was foiled by (of all things) transportation issues. Instead, they debuted the UFO at a hometown show in Oklahoma City. It will get one more test run Saturday night in San Francisco."

Per YouTube.com/group/flaminglips:

"flaminglips (13 hours ago)
A winner has been chosen and is being contacted. We will announce the winner(s) as soon as they have been confirmed. Thanks and Happy New Year."

So far all we know is Doug Ruhue Kind1002 with all the lights strapped on and the nice words prelude is the winner. But again there is that (s) after winner so stay tuned!!!

And, the (s) behind the word "winner" earlier turned out to be telling... the Lips chose not one, but TWO winners.

Doug we already knew about, the official notice posted up about 3 hours ago on YouTube says Lisa Nova is the tied winner.

"flaminglips (3 hours ago)
Well, after much heated debate and many hours of reviewing submissions we were unable to decide on a single winner like we had planned. SO, we picked two. The winners of the Dance on New Years with the Flaming Lips Contest are......Doug 'kind1002' of Media, PA and LisaNova of Los Angeles,CA. Congratulations to both of you and many thanks to everyone for all the wonderful submissions we received. "

I found it ironic - one might say it even smacks of being rigged. The Lisa Nova connection was obvious from the onset.

People who've never heard of the Lips followed Lisa on over to their page. Almost all Lips fans had never heard of Lisa before the contest.

Because of Lisa's huge YouTube following they used each other quite blatently it appears to this writer.

Good job... I guess. Strange it took until 12/30/2006 Noon PST to announce finally make their formal decision.

A last word just to get it off my chest... there were maybe 30-35 real good legit entries to pick from that would have been true worthy fans that basically got screwed by choosing Lisa instead.

Seems as though picking maybe two or even four more besides Doug would have been the kick-ass thing to have done.

Lisa can afford tickets. Lisa lives in L.A. and could have been dragged up on stage seperate from this contest.

I'm sorry to all the others. Sorry you had to wait for four agonizing days to learn there is no surprise decision to include a number of you. I was hoping against hope for you.

Certainly many of you thought that there may be some possibility you ticket holders going to see them regardless would be notified of having made room for you.

And again I'm sorry, it appears the wait is finally over and the decision is final.

If you are unable to attend the New Years Eve Extravaganza, aka the Dawn of Destiny personally, please check back after the Rose Parade.

I hope to have some pics and commentary for you.
